Devastated apiarists are demanding to know how they will be compensated as millions of bees are killed in NSW. Meanwhile, Queensland has become the latest state to impose border restrictions amid the varroa mite outbreak.

Queensland and Victoria join South Australia in restricting the movement of all bees and related equipment from NSW as the state struggles to contain the destructive pest.

A new eradication zone has been established in NSW as hundreds of beehives are destroyed in the battle to contain an outbreak of the deadly varroa mite.

So far more than 600 hives have been destroyed and "that number will grow". Generally, bees are euthanised by pouring petrol into the hive, leaving it overnight, then burning the hive.
