Chicago City Council members repeatedly expressed frustration Wednesday as police officials gave conflicting, sometimes puzzling reasons why they have not moved more aggressively against officers tied to far-right groups implicated in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

The city has revamped 18 busy intersections, adding rubber speed bumps and bollards to force more precise left turns. Feedback has been mixed, but the city plans to install more this year.

Last month, Ald. Jeanette Taylor delayed the project, which has drawn scrutiny over residential displacement, truck traffic and pollution. Wednesday, she admonished Norfolk Southern — but voted for the expansion.

The mayor called the slowdown a “parliamentary game” and tried to call the Council back to meet Tuesday, just to rescue the deal. But that effort also was defeated, and the Council isn’t scheduled to meet again until March.

Chicago City Council members can select who they want on committees and who should lead them. State law and the city’s own rules clearly spell out they have that power. They just have always opted out and have given the mayor their blessing to do their bidding.
