Elliott grabbed the lead for the time on a restart with eight of the scheduled 267 laps remaining, after Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wrecked off Turn 2 to bring out the 12th caution of the race, and fended off Denny Hamlin on a restart with two laps to go.

Larson was the only driver to break into the 28.3s in the final round of qualifying, earning his 19th career pole. It was another milestone for Hendrick Motorsports, capturing its 250th pole in the Cup Series.

Elliott ran strong throughout Sunday’s race and a late-race wreck sent up an overtime restart that put Elliott alongside Hendrick Motorsports teammate and leader William Byron on the front row.

Hendrick was originally scheduled to serve as the honorary pace car driver for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race, which was also the 40th anniversary of HMS’ first Cup win by Geoffrey Bodine.

Martin Truex Jr. dominated the Cup race at Richmond, but a late-caution forced the event into overtime and completely changed the outcome. Truex's Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate Denny Hamlin won the race off pitroad, and then held on in the two-lap dash to the checkered flag.

NASCAR approved the use of wet weather tires at some oval tracks ahead of the 2023 season but had yet to utilize the package in a Cup Series points-paying race.

William Byron earned pole position, led the most laps, and became the first repeat winner of the 2024 season with his victory last weekend at COTA. 

Byron, who drives the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, became the series’ first repeat winner of the season with his dominating win last weekend at Circuit of the Americas.
