After four years of construction Edinburgh's new £207m tram line from Picardy Place to Newhaven opens to the public today - but city residents can only expect a short break from tram works as attention turns to the next extension.

Edinburgh Live went down for a sneak peek of the new tram line and decided to have a Top Gear-style race to see which was faster - the bus or the tram.

Services on the route to Newhaven are scheduled to start from 7 June

The first Newhaven tram services carrying passengers have been given an official launch date by the City of Edinburgh Council on Thursday, and it is not far away.

Rosanna and Tom Costello have secured the funding to find a permanent home on Newhaven Road and will offer a service unlike any other in the capital, including advice on treating your houseplants

Locals spotted the trams making their way from the city centre, down Leith Walk to Newhaven as the official launch date edges nearer. Last month, overnight testing began on the line to minimise disruption to traffic

There is varied opinions about the trams and especially in the Leith Walk as many residents have criticised the cost, time spent and the disruption that the trams have supposedly caused to the area.

The wheels were discovered at the Pilrig Street junction with Leith Walk in August 2021 during the Tram to Newhaven excavations. A permanent public display will be established to view the wheels
