Edinburgh restaurant posts public Facebook apology to diners over 'slip in standards'

A popular Edinburgh pub has apologised on social media following what it describes as a slip in their "usual standards of tidiness", earning praise from customers and local residents for owning the issue.

The Old Chain Pier on Trinity Crescent in Newhaven, which sits close to the Firth of the Forth and offers seafood and traditional pub dishes, took to their official Facebook page to explain that they have been notified that there have been a "few instances" of recycling and other waste rubbish being "improperly stored and managed".

Deciding to take responsibility, the owners posted a public apology, writing: "Hands up, we have dropped the ball here and want to apologise to our wonderful community for a slip in our usual standards of tidiness around the premises.

"Whilst faulty bin locks and howling winds may have been co-conspirators recently, there is still no excuse for us not being on top of this stuff.

"We want to assure you that these observations are being taken very seriously."

They confirmed that to fix the issue, their staff have been "re-trained on waste management procedures".

They added that they've implemented twice daily inspections by management, requested better-locking mechanisms to avoid contamination from non-staff and are working to find a long-term solution to their "storage challenges".

They finished by saying: "This area means a lot to us and we share your pride in the local amenity and environs."

Customers and local residents flocked to the post to praise the bar team for owning the issue and stepping up to not only apologise but try to find solutions.

One wrote: "I appreciate your candour and bravery. Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone steps up to address the wider problem, own their share, and take steps to fix things. Thank you."

While another put it simply: "This is how to apologise."

A spokesperson for the bar and restaurant explained that they had received a complaint after some recycling had not been secured properly and had been blown onto the beach below, adding that they took it and any complaint very seriously and that they were very embarrassed by the mistake.

They added: "It's not like us, the place is always really nice and fresh but what with the recent winds and a couple of our rather flimsy waste bins, we had made an error and we wanted to improve things.

"We want to get a better long-term storage solution and we're working on that now. Like many Edinburgh pubs and restaurants we've got a tiny cellar, so indoor storage isn't really an option. We'll figure it out with help from our neighbours who are a fantastic bunch. It's a gorgeous place and we can't have a few bits of cardboard messing up the best view from any restaurant in Edinburgh."
