The leaders of South Korea, Japan and the United States, among other nations, will hold an emergency meeting on Friday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit after North Korea's missile launch, the Kyodo news agency said.

North Korea has dramatically ramped up missile tests this year and launched a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday that Japan's defence minister said was capable of striking the U.S. mainland.

The launch came a day after North Korean officials warned of warned of a "fiercer" response to the U.S. and its allies.

A missile fired on Friday by North Korea had sufficient range to reach the United States mainland, and was capable of flying as far as 15,000 km (9,320 miles), Japan's defence minister, Yasukazu Hamada, said.
