'We want to be aggressive' - Brian Sorensen calls on his Everton side to know their identity

New manager Brian Sorensen has insisted that it’s important for the players in his Everton Women side to “know what our identity is” as he called for them to try and implement a style of play that is both possession-based and aggressive. The Blues saw two bosses leave the club last season as Willie Kirk departed on October 16 while Jean-Luc Vasseur, who won the Champions League with Lyon in 2020 was, sacked after just 10 games in charge on February 1.

Dane Sorensen, 41, who joins Everton after a second spell in charge of Fortuna Hjorring in his homeland, told evertontv : “We want to be aggressive and we want to be proactive – I think that is the key word – in everything we do. That is with the ball and without the ball.

“We want to have control over games, and you do that by keeping possession. We need to make sure the players know what our identity is and implement that day in, day out. All the details matter.”

Sorensen, who has won a brace of league titles and domestic cups back in Denmark, believes there is great potential at Everton and said: “It feels fantastic to be here. I set it as a target three years ago that wanted to go into the Women’s Super League.

“Everton is one of the most historic clubs in the women’s game, so it is a dream come true. I have had some really good talks with Alan [McTavish, Everton Women Managing Director] about how we get back on track.

“I am hoping to use the knowledge I have and put a structure in place, making sure the building blocks are there to get the team back where it belongs. To achieve that, it’s about setting the standards – making sure we have a squad that is balanced in mindset and skillset.”

Everton finished 10 th out of the 12 clubs in the WSL in 2021/22 and with the new season kicking off in September – when the Blues will be joined by newly-promoted neighbours Liverpool – Sorensen is looking forward to getting to know the supporters at Walton Hall Park.

He said: “The support the fans give the team is unbelievable. I hope they will continue with that.

“We want to give them good moments and victories. I am looking forward to meeting them and showing them who I am.”
