'The right time to step down': Hockeyroos coach

Katrina Powell has quit as Australia's women's hockey coach.

Powell took over the Hockeyroos in March 2021 in the wake of systemic cultural problems in the elite women's program.

The 53-year-old said the time was now right to relinquish the role ahead of the Hockeyroos entering this year's selection process.

"It's been an honour to coach the Hockeyroos for the last four-and-a-half years and I'm proud to have taken the group forward," Powell said in a statement on Wednesday.

"With the 2026 squad selection process about to commence, I felt it was the right time to step down and clear the path for the next head coach."

Assistant coach Rhett Halkett will take over in an interim capacity as Hockey Australia search for a permanent replacement.

Powell took charge ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but the Hockeyroos fell in the quarter-final stage at those Games.

The team exited at the same stage at last year's Paris Olympics, unable to replicate their bronze-medal feat at the 2022 World Cup.

Hockey Australia chief executive David Pryles paid tribute to Powell, a former Hockeyroos captain and member of the teams that won Olympic gold in 1996 and 2000.

Powell replaced Paul Gaudoin as coach, who was stood down in March 2021 on the eve of a review which found a toxic culture and dysfunctional leadership pervaded the program.

"I would like to sincerely thank Katrina ... she stepped into the role during a turbulent time and played a key role in stabilising and rebuilding the Hockeyroos culture," Pryles said in a statement.
