Rail strike: Alternative travel from Glasgow to Ayr, Irvine and Stirling

Union members of Network Rail have announced they will be carrying out strike action in June and July.

Next week, they will be striking on June 21, 23, 25. While ScotRail are not associated with the industrial action, there has been a knock-on-effect as Network Rail staff in Scotland provide 'safety critical' roles, such as signallers.

This has meant that ScotRail have been forced to cancel over 95 per cent of the trains next week.

Many rely on trains to get us from A to B, but as there will only be a handful of services running, alternative routes will have to be planned.

Trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh will still run, but on those three days, services will stop before 6.30pm, and ScotRail is urging customers to be familiar with the last train available and expect disruption.

If you still need to travel, here are alternative ways to get to Ayr, Irvine and Stirling from Glasgow.

Buses run extremely regularly from Glasgow to Ayr and it takes only an hour. (PA)

Ayr

Buses run extremely regularly from Glasgow to Ayr and it takes only an hour.

Every 20 minutes, the X77 leaves Buchanan Bus Station and it takes between an hour and an hour and 10 minutes to get to Ayr. Price starts at £7.30.

The 923 City Link service to Stranraer calls at Ayr in just 55 minutes from leaving Glasgow. Often with City Link, the earlier you book, the cheaper it is. You can see more information here.

Everyday in the week, it leaves at 8.30am, 12.20pm, 4.15pm and 9.05pm.

Irvine

If you need to get down to North Ayrshire, direct buses to Irvine aren't as regular, but if you're prepared for a change, you can get one as quickly as every ten minutes from Buchanan Bus Station.

You can get the X77, change at Prestwick, Saunterne Road and then get the 585 bus from Ardrossan for a price starting at £11.50.

The X34 is the direct bus and takes an hour and 25 minutes with ticket prices starting at £5.80.

You can see the available buses on the Stagecoach website.

Stirling

If there are no trains running, the Mega Bus provides an easy link between the two cities.

It takes around 49 minutes, with prices starting at £6.30 depending on the time you book.

On a weekday, the last bus to leave Glasgow to get to Stirling is 12.30am, and from 6am, there is a bus every hour.

You can see more information on the Megabus website.
