Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has addressed the many rumors around the Grand Theft Auto 6 price amidst the 80$ price hike controversy for AAA games. GTA VI is still on track for a May 26, 2026 release, but the gamers worldwide are anxious to learn just how much they will have to shell out for one of the most expected games of the year (or better to say many years, we've been waiting for so long).
“Our goal always is to deliver more value than what we charge, so we’ve had variable pricing at the company forever.'' Zelnick stated for an interview with Variety before the Take-Two Interactive Quarterly Earnings presentation. That's saying a lot without actually confirming anything. So what can we expect?
How Much Will GTA 6 Cost?
The gaming industry has already normalized the jump from $60 to $70 for AAA titles, as well as some games that have increase their prices to 80$. This isn't the industry standard yet, and some games like The Outer Worlds 2 have reverted their decision to hike up their prices due to large community backlash. So will GTA 6 cost 80 or even a 100 dollars? There's certainly a lot of content and a lot of effort put into it to suspect that the game will be costlier than others, even if we haven't gotten an official confirmation just yet.
Compared to games from previous years, the development costs are astronomical, especially for AAA games. With an estimated development budget of over $1 billion, the logical assumption would be that the game is going to be more expensive compared to previous GTA iterations as well as other games. Zelnick himself has also stated that ''we’ve had variable pricing at the company forever''. The goal is to keep it fair, an accurate pricing for the amount of effort and content put into the game. The game may be one of their biggest contributors to Net Bookings, confirmed by Take-Two in their Q6 statements, so a higher GTA 6 price wouldn't come as a surprise.
However, with the success of Clair Obsucure, we can also attest that bigger isn't always better, and that a smaller team can accomplish just as much, if not more. Along with plenty of other indie games with smaller teams that have jumped to popularity, like PEAK, R.E.P.O. and even Lethal Company (a one-man show), we can see that success isn't all about money being invested into the game. This is the exact reason why many gamers aren't happy with the chance of the GTA 6 cost being more.
If the game also has microtransactions included, then there's even less reason for the Grand Theft Auto 6 price to be higher than 70 dollars. Another reason against a more expensive GTA 6 is the reduced cost of physical copies (most people will buy digital). And when you think of the fact that you don't really own any digital copies of a game and that you could lose them at any point, due to no fault of your own, then the price hike becomes more and more illogical.
Overall, it's most likely that GTA 6 base game will cost $80, but that special editions, and especially the physical collectors edition with special items (which we could expect), might cost $100 and more.
How GTA 6 Fits Into Gaming's Pricing Revolution
It's no joke that Grand Theft Auto games are one of the pillars of the gaming industry, even with memes and counting time. We got X before GTA 6 is the standard measure of time for us. On a serious note, GTA 6 has defined generations. From the ever-successful trailers, we can expect GTA 6 to set new industry standards, even when it comes to the cost of the game.
While GTA 6 might deserve a high price even for the base game, we have to take into consideration that other big game developers will follow in their footsteps just because they are also AAA. Again, that could be worth it for some games, but we all know that not all AAA games are actually good. If Grand Theft Auto hikes up their price, we can see other studios and developers follow.
GTA 6 FAQ
GTA 6 will most likely cost $70-80 for the base game, with special editions and Physical Collectors' editions costing more $100+. There is no official GTA pricing just yet, however, so we can only speculate right now.
Since the game is set for May 25, 2026, we could expect the price to be announced in Q4 of 2025, or even as late as Q1 of 2026.
GTA 6 is the next installment in one of the most popular franchises in the world. Take-Two's approach focuses on delivering "infinite value" by providing ongoing content and updates. While mostly unlikely at the moment, even a $100 initial price point could be justified by years of post-launch content and updates.
