Could Giants QB Daniel Jones end up with the New York Jets?

The weeks between the Super Bowl and the NFL Combine and free agency bring out all kinds of narratives across the airwaves and on social media.

Since there is not much news to report, speculation runs wild and sometimes even the most sensible sources reach for content.

Buy Giants Tickets

Such is the case of former New York Giants All-Pro running back turned local radio host, Tiki Barber, who believes that quarterback Daniel Jones will be staying in New York, but not necessarily with the Giants.

From NJ Advance Media:

Tuesday on WFAN, Barber proposed Jones changing locker rooms at MetLife Stadium. Here’s what he told co-host Brandon Tierney:

“If the Jets get stuck with nobody … forget possible. It could be a reality … if they get stuck with nobody, the guy who’s across the town, Daniel Jones, is more valuable to them than he is to the New York Giants. They didn’t draft Daniel Jones. They still got a lot of pieces they got to get in place before they’re viable — before they can even beat the Eagles. Daniel Jones makes a lot of sense for the Jets, as crazy as it sounds.”

Very unlikely, but one never knows. Tiki does make some salient points.

The Giants’ feelings for Jones have not exactly been what you would call ‘unconditionally in love’ but they do want him back. Remember, the Giants did not exercise Jones’ fifth-year option because they wanted to see if he was deserving of a second contract.

Now that they have seen what Jones can do, they are strategizing the best way to retain him without blowing up their salary structure.

The Giants will be negotiating with Jones and his reps right up until the March 7 franchise tag deadline and if no deal is struck, they could use the ‘non-exclusive’ tag on him. This way any team — including the Jets — will have to surrender two first-round picks to the Giants if they want to sign him.

If the Jets are undeterred and this scenario plays out, we’ll see if the Giants match their offer. Let’s be clear, though, few think this situation gets that far.
