3 Powerful Bhagavad Gita Teachings for Success & Self-Mastery

Bhagavad Gita is a spiritual text that can provide guiding light to anyone who is struggling or even to someone at a tipping point in his life. The profound words of Lord Krishna helped Arjuna overcome all his internal battles and, as a result, become triumphant in the Mahabharata war. Similarly, if we read and truly understand the essence of Bhagwan’s words, we can also achieve the same results in our lives. In this article, we will explore some of the best ideas gifted by Lord Krishna for achieving success and self-mastery.

In chapter 6, Lord Krishna told Arjuna:

“Lift yourself by your own efforts. Don’t let your mind be your enemy- make it your best friend through discipline and awareness.”

The truth is, the mind is our best alley in our journey towards success. What happens when a room becomes too cluttered and dirty? It will become less comfortable to live there. Similarly, our mind can also become cluttered through too much distractions. Therefore, we should take it up as a fundamental responsibility to constantly clean our minds. Meditation, self discipline and hatha yoga are the three best techniques that we can use to achieve the same.

Allot some time everyday to immerse yourself in meditation. You can start with mindfulness meditation. Sit down straight and focus on your breath coming in and going out through the nostrils. Whenever you feel that the mind is getting filled with random thoughts, become aware. Remain present and bring the focus back into your breath without any reaction. Continue doing this and in a few days, your focus, inner peace and overall mindfulness will skyrocket.

Secondly, plan how you will be spending each hour of the day for attaining intense self-discipline. Finally, start practising hatha yoga for overall physical, mental and spiritual wellness. You can refer classic texts such as Hatha Yoga Pradipika or Shiva Samhita to learn the basics of this great wisdom handed down to us by the enlightened rishis.

2. Surrender to the Supreme

Holding the shoulder of a perplexed and disillusioned Arjuna, Lord Krishna said: ”Abandon all varieties of dharma and just surrender unto Me alone. I will deliver you from all sinful reactions; do not fear.”

A basic element that keeps us strongly attached to worldly matters is the craving for the fruits of our actions. When we are constantly worrying about the future, we are not remaining in the present moment. However, to act with poise and inner strength, we have remain totally grounded in the present moment. To achieve the same, Lord Krishna gave us this beautiful philosophy of surrendering to the Supreme. When you start considering your every act as offerings to Bhagwan, the deep attachments to worldly matters will slowly get removed. Wake up during Brahma Muhurta and spend some time daily, connecting your internal world with Lord Krishna’s energy. Light a diyas and meditate for sometime. Then, go out there in the world and perform your duties with utmost sincerity.

3. Understand Impermanence

In chapter 2, Lord Krishna reminded Arjuna: “For one who has taken birth, death is certain.”

The universal law of impermanence is an ultimate truth of existence. Whether we like it or not, whatever that has taken birth will have to face the reality of death. Hence, running after money, fame or sensual distractions is meaningless. Instead our entire focus should be directed towards fulfilling our duties without attachments. Follow the path of Karma Yoga. Allot sometime everyday to remember the truth of death. In the ancient times people used to keep a human skull in their room for the same. However, you can contemplate about death in the morning or evening. This will help you to understand the meaninglessness of distractions and, as a result, concentrate deeply on your purpose in life.
