New report warns people are increasingly at risk in a continent warming twice as fast as the global average.

Europe endured a record number of "extreme heat stress" days in 2023, two leading climate monitors said Monday, underscoring the threat of increasingly deadly summers across the continent.

Stark climate warnings come ahead of this year's World Meteorological Day, observed on Saturday, with the UN's weather agency confirming that global temperatures had "smashed" heat records in 2023 – raising ocean temperatures and melting glaciers faster than before. Even hotter conditions are expected for the year ahead.

"There is a high probability that 2024 will again break the record of 2023", WMO climate monitoring chief Omar Baddour told reporters.
