The administration of US President Donald Trump has been ordered to restore all Voice of America (VOA) staff and contractors to their jobs.

The White House called the service, which has existed since 1942, 'The Voice of Radical America' and said Trump’s order would 'ensure that taxpayers are no longer on the hook for radical propaganda.'

Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has adopted a heavy-handed approach to cutting any perceived wasteful spending in the US government.

VOA journalists sued the Trump administration for shutting down the network, asking a federal court to restore the outlet that supplies news around the world.

Of all the contradictions and ironies of Donald Trump’s second presidency so far, perhaps the most surprising has been his shutting down the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) for being “radical propaganda”.

Repressive regimes will fill the information void left by defunded news outlets like Voice of America, say media experts.

On March 14, 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order that called for the dismantling of seven federal agencies “to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.” They ranged from the United States Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, to the Minority Business Development Agency.

Trump also mentioned in the order that DOGE has already identified billions in "waste, fraud, and abuse" from these federal agencies.
