For the first time since Texas outlawed nearly all abortions, lawmakers are clarifying the “life of mother” exception. But they don’t plan to address cases where the fetus won’t survive.

This is the first analysis of live births since the law, which banned abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, went into effect in September 2021.

AUSTIN, Texas — After ushering in a near-total abortion ban last year, the state’s GOP leaders are treading carefully on the eve of the upcoming legislative session and not openly saying how they will handle the hot-button issue.

In some battleground state legislative races, Republicans have been making overtures to those who believe the ban as too extreme. They have said they are open to revising the ban to include the exceptions — and even voiced confidence that the Legislature will do so when it reconvenes in January.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas’ “trigger” law banning most abortions in the state is scheduled to go into effect Aug. 25, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced in a Wednesday advisory.

Doctors and legal experts say Texas’ anti-abortion laws haven’t yet affected fertility treatments, and it appears an unlikely target for anti-abortion groups in the state for now.
