The Uttar Pradesh police has opposed journalist Siddique Kappan's bail plea on grounds that he is purportedly “part of the larger conspiracy...to foment religious discord and spread terror in the country”.

To build its case against the alleged perpetrators of the Kanpur violence in June, the Uttar Pradesh police invoked a conspiracy theory: that the local Muslims were trying to “take over” Hindu land “under the guise of riots”.

The Supreme Court on Monday heard the bail plea of jailed journalist Siddique Kappan and posted the matter for disposal on September 9.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice U. U. Lalit and Justice S. Ravindra Bhat issued notice to the State of Uttar Pradesh and directed it to file a counter to the bail plea by Sidhique Kappan.
