The websites of several big energy firms have gone down as millions try to send meter readings covering their energy usage up to the end of March.

A number of energy suppliers' websites have crashed just a day before the new price cap comes into force that will push bills up by at least 54 per cent. Bill payers have been urged to submit readings today to avoid being charged more than they should.
