Only three nations – the US, Russia and China – have managed a safe “soft” landing on the Moon, and no country has done so at its south pole. Until now that is.

The Blue Moon that wraps up the month of August will also be a Supermoon. The next Blue Moon won't happen until 2026.

ISRO on August 25 said rover Pragyaan successfully traversed 8m and payloads LIBS and APXS turned on. All payloads on propulsion, lander and rover modules performing nominally. ILSA, RAMBHA & ChaSTE payloads turned on to measure seismic activity, plasma environment and surface thermal properties of Moon.

On Aug. 23, India's Chandrayaan-3 became the first mission to successfully land near the moon's south pole. But why is this dark, shadowy area so important to space agencies?

In 2019, India attempted to land a spacecraft on the Moon – and ended up painting a kilometres-long streak of debris on its barren surface. Now the Indian Space Research Organisation has returned in triumph, with the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully touching down near the south pole of Earth’s rocky neighbour.

India made history as the first country to land near the south pole of the Moon with its Chandrayaan-3 lander on Aug. 23, 2023. This also makes it the first country to land on the Moon since China in 2020.

Because it's there, but also because it has resources that can support future lunar bases and Mars missions.

2023 is a busy year for lunar missions, with India, Russia, U.S., China and Japan all launching missions to the Moon.
