Authorities in India's northeastern state of Manipur are investigating if the death of 18-20 people in the last few days was due to recent clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups, a government official said.

The government of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) has set up a helpline and control room at AP Bhavan in New Delhi to render assistance to the students held up in Manipur where violent clashes broke out between some local communities

Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh wrote to NTA to take into account the current situation in Manipur and postpone the exam.

The death toll in the ethnic violence which has engulfed Manipur increased to 54, officials said even as unofficial sources placed the figure at several scores dead and more than 150 injured.

Medical career aspirants and their parents in violence-hit Manipur have urged the National Testing Agency to defer the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled on May 7.

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Association has condemned the killing of an income tax officer by a mob in violence-hit Manipur. The IRS officer’s death followed that of Chonkholen Haokip, a CRPF constable of the force’s elite CoBRA unit who was on leave.
