The Latest Breaking News from Kashmir

In the evening on August 4, the Indian government put Kashmir under a security lockdown and communications blackout to pre-empt protests against the dismantling of its special constitutional status. Over 40 days later, Kashmir is yet to return to “normal”, the state’s police chief Dilbag Singh admitted. 

I have changed my demeanour after the abrogation of Article 370, and my bio now reads: ‘A subjugated Kashmiri who has been hegemonised–politically, socially and emotionally.’

When they weren’t traversing the valley for stories and reports, journalists in Kashmir could often be found at the Press Club in Srinagar or at the city’s so-called Media Facilitation Centre. While the former remained a territory of choice for most scribes, the latter became a territory of circumstance.
