WASHINGTON — The House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol unanimously voted Monday to urge the Justice Department to take the unprecedented step of pursuing several potential criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, including insurrection.

The referrals have no legal weight but could add to the pressure against Mr Trump, who is already the subject of multiple criminal probes

A criminal referral is mostly symbolic; ultimately, the Justice Department decides whether to prosecute. The panel also released a summary of its final report, finding that Trump engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the election.

The panel also announced the referral of criminal charges against former Trump lawyer John Eastman.
