Gustavo Petro tells the UN General Assembly that there should be 'criminal proceedings' over US strikes on alleged drug trafficking vessels.

The Colombian president believes the US has more to gain from the Colombian drug war.

Colombia on Tuesday halted arms purchases from the United States, its biggest military partner, after Washington decertified the South American country as an anti-drugs ally for failing to halt cocaine trafficking.

Petro also said Colombia's armed forces should no longer rely on U.S. weaponry: "the army will do better if it buys its weapons or makes them with our own resources"

The United States has delivered a major blow to one of its closest South American allies by stripping Colombia of its coveted anti-drug certification.

US President Trump also places Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar and Venezuela on list of states who failed to fight drugs.

"If Petro continues on this path, we will have to reconsider, because dollars from our government will no longer flow in the same way to Colombia," added Scott

In recent weeks, Petro condemned Washington's deployment of naval assets near Venezuelan waters and rejected claims about the existence of the "Cartel de los Soles"
