Formula 1’s plans to hold a rookie sprint race after the season finale in Abu Dhabi look set to be given the green light next month, Autosport has learned.

Following a push by F1's midfield teams to extend the current points structure to cover the top 12, the topic was put on the agenda for Thursday's F1 Commission meeting attended by the FIA, F1 and all 10 teams.

In a statement, the FIA has since confirmed that the points tweak would be revisited again at the next meeting.

The talks will take place when teams join the FIA and F1 management for a gathering of the regular F1 Commission in Geneva and via video conference, as they debate a range of topics relating to technical and sporting matters.

The clock is ticking as the first sprint of 2024 is in China on 19-21 April, to be followed by events at the Miami, Austrian, US, Qatar and Brazilian GPs.

Following an agreement at a recent F1 Commission meeting, teams are not allowed to undertake any wind tunnel or CFD work for the new spec cars until January 1 2025, mirroring a similar arrangement that was made ahead of the last big rules change in 2022.

It is understood that Alpine has withdrawn a series of proposed upgrades to its current engine as these did not gain full support from rival teams, which led to an FIA assessment of the situation being closed.   

It was the Belgian’s first running in an F1 car since he tested for Mercedes in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2021.
