The freshman mayor will meet with members of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus at the United Center on Tuesday to plan for how to handle the more than 30,000 arrivals to the city.

Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th), chair of the City Council’s Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights, said Deputy Chief of Staff Cristina Pacione-Zayas told him late last month of the city’s plan to, as she put it, “right-size” the migrant shelter system without offering details.

The site at 800 S. Deplaines St. is holding more than 500 people. Many say they’re practically sleeping on top of each other, with little food and medical assistance.

A lengthy list of requirements includes living in the city for the last five years, and not working for CPD, COPA or the Police Board in that time. The deadline to apply is noon on Feb. 7. Out of 14 nominees, the mayor will choose seven.

Groups receiving the funds will use them to revitalize commercial corridors across Chicago, including Michigan Avenue downtown and business districts in Garfield Park, Pilsen, Humboldt Park, Uptown, West Loop, Lake View and Chatham.
