The town hall-style forum with an audience of more than 700 was light on attacks between the two men vying for the mayor’s office.

The rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the UIC Forum. It has potential to help Johnson energize his base and boost turnout, particularly among young voters who supported Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.

Despite following very different paths, both now have their sights trained on Chicago’s City Hall.

The middle child in a family of 10 children, Johnson grew up in a three-bedroom Elgin home with parents who were pastors and also foster parents. After his mother died, Johnson helped to carry the ministry forward. “This is really a faith walk,” he says of his run for mayor.

With early voting underway, mayoral hopefuls Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas were urged to not only focus on public safety, but also on ‘environmental violence.’

Their third runoff debate was more restrained than previous ones — but not without some big swings, as when Vallas said he’s got more teaching experience than Johnson. “You can’t keep just dismissing people, Paul,” Johnson responded. “It’s irresponsible.”
