CHICAGO — The Arlington Heights Village Board on Monday unanimously rejected a proposed referendum to prohibit public subsidies for a proposed Chicago Bears stadium development or any other private enterprise.

The lifespan of stadiums is shrinking, and just because the team isn’t asking for tax help now doesn’t mean it won’t next time.

As the Bears faithful hung out before the team’s rain-drenched opening win on Sunday, the specter of a potential move to Arlington Heights loomed like the storm clouds over Soldier Field.

Anything other than a new stadium in the suburbs is off the table at the moment, including renovations to Soldier Field.

Given today’s economic climate and the generous windfall the team would reap if the venture is successful, taxpayers shouldn’t fund any portion of the Bears move. Shame on them for even asking.

CHICAGO —For the first time, the Chicago Bears confirmed Tuesday that the stadium the team is considering building in Arlington Heights would be domed — but the team also called for taxpayer funding of a portion of the project, and noted the plan was still tentative.
