Youth held in Bengaluru for stealing gold from family

BENGALURU: Probe into a suicide attempt helped KP Agrahara police solve a theft case and recover gold jewels worth Rs 5 lakh. The suspect is Naveen Kumar, 22.

Police said Kumar’s mother was friends with Shivashankaraiah’s wife Chandrakala. Both families stayed in KP Agrahara and Kumar used to visit Shivshankaraiah’s family frequently. He fell in love with a girl and wanted to gift her jewellery. He initially stole 21 grams of gold on March 11 from Chandrakala’s house and another 88 grams on March 31.

Chandrakala noticed her ornaments were missing on April 1, when her family decided to visit their hometown for Ugadi festival. She informed her husband, which led to an argument between the two and Chandrakala took sleeping tablets in a bid to kill herself. Her husband rushed her to nearby hospital and police were informed about the attempt to murder. When KP Agrahara police learnt missing gold was the reason, they checked CCTV footage and found Kumar was near Chandrakala’s residence on March 31. He confessed to the crime.
