Young boy struck by lightning at beach

A 10-year-old boy has been struck by lightning at a beach near Wollongong on Australia Day.

NSW Ambulance said the freak accident happened at Barrack Point near Wollongong after a storm cell hit the area on Thursday evening.

Paramedics are on the scene administering CPR.

NSW Police told AAP the boy was breathing but was still being monitored.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for large parts of eastern NSW including areas surrounding Wollongong.
