You Can Now Edit Your Photos with Gemini

Google has announced a big update for Google Photos that takes the hassle out of image editing. Starting first with the Pixel 10 devices in the U.S., you can now edit photos just by describing the changes you want. The feature will expand to other Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks.

As expected, the new capability is backed by Google’s Gemini models and is part of the recently redesigned Photos editor. Instead of hunting for the right tools or adjusting sliders, you can just say what you want. For example, “remove the cars in the background,” “restore this old photo,” or even a general “make it better.” Google Photos will then automatically apply the edits.

Interestingly, this conversational approach goes beyond simple fixes. You can combine requests like “remove reflections and fix the washed-out colors” or even get creative by changing backgrounds, adding objects, or giving subjects accessories like sunglasses or party hats. Apart from that, even if you are not happy with the edited results, you can refine them further with follow-up instructions.

Furthermore, to make AI edits more transparent, the company is adopting C2PA Content Credentials, which show how an image was captured or modified. Pixel 10 will be the first device to embed this metadata directly in the camera app, and Photos will display it along with the existing support for IPTC metadata and Google’s SynthID.

However, it’s not like Google is the only player in the AI-powered photo editing space. Recently, Qwen released a free, local, and open-source image editing tool built on its 20B Qwen-Image model. Apart from its free and open source nature, the biggest highlight of its photo editing tool is its precise text editing capabilities, an area where the majority of the AI editors still struggle. I have given it a shot and was quite impressed with the little amount of time I spent with the tool.

That’s all about Google Photos or AI-backed photo editing tools for now. However, if you want to get the next AI updates delivered straight to your phone, then join us on WhatsApp.
