Yellow weather warning for wind for London as 55mph gusts predicted

London has been hit with yellow weather warnings from the Met Office as extreme winds of up to 55mph are predicted on Sunday and Monday.

Strong and gusty winds are expected across the whole of England, likely causing disruption to rail and road travel, as well as power sources.

Londoners have also been advised to check road conditions if driving and bus or train timetables to look out for delays or alterations to their journeys.

The weather warning is in place across the UK from Sunday at 8pm, until Monday at 6pm.

In London wind gusts of up to 30mph are expected on Saturday and Sunday, while Monday could see wind speeds hit up to 48mph across the city.

Londoners should expect heavy rain in the afternoon on Sunday, while higher wind speeds are expected on Monday.

The weather in London is expected to settle at the start of next week, with extreme winds clearing by Tuesday.

Elsewhere, strong west winds are due to arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales on Sunday evening and are expected to develop inland on Monday.

Gusts of up to 70mph may be possible along coasts and hills, but are expected to slowly ease from the west later on Monday evening.

The extreme gusts are due to impact the whole of the UK from the south east up to Yorkshire, also hitting major cities including Bristol, Brighton and Nottingham.

The Met Office said weather warnings are likely to change quickly and recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.

This yellow warning follows earlier extreme weather alerts at the end of August as Hurricane Erin reached the UK, which caused heavy showers and prolonged periods of rain to sweep across the country.

How to stay safe in extreme winds

To prepare for potential power cuts, the Met Office has advised getting torches, batteries and mobile phone power packs.

To protect your property from damage and other people from injury, the Met Office advises securing loose items outside your home in periods of high winds.

The Met Office advises securing items including bins, plant pots and garden furniture. Trampolines should be turned upside down and secured with tent pegs, while you should also ensure that shed doors are locked.

Before making a journey, you should plan your route and check for delays and road closures. You should pack essentials and prepare for the worst, bringing warm clothing, food, drink, a blanket and a torch.

Driving in strong winds should be avoided, but if journeys are necessary, you should drive slowly to minimise the impact of wind gusts, be aware of high sided vehicles or caravans on more exposed roads and make sure you hold your steering wheel firmly.

You should also give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses more room than usual.

Being outside in high winds makes you more vulnerable to injury. You should stay indoors as much as possible, but if you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees.
