A trend circulating on TikTok recommends eating the evening meal before 6 or 7 p.m., a practice its proponents say improves sleep quality, reduces acid reflux, and supports blood sugar control. Unlike many viral health claims, this one has actual science behind it. Experts interviewed by Healthline in a July 18, 2026 analysis confirmed that eating dinner earlier in the evening does align with how the human body's internal clock manages digestion, metabolism, and sleep onset.

That does not mean every TikTok claim about "early bird dinners" is accurate, or that shifting dinner to 5 p.m. solves significant sleep or metabolic disorders on its own. But in a media landscape where most viral health trends cannot survive contact with actual clinical evidence, this one holds up better than most.

"Eating earlier improves sleep by reducing digestion while asleep, and minimizing acid reflux, both of which can be disruptive to a good night's sleep."

Sarathi Bhattacharyya, MD, a pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist and medical director of the MemorialCare Sleep Disorders Center at Long Beach Medical Center in California, noted that eating or drinking close to bedtime, including caffeine or alcohol, disrupts sleep architecture. He recommended avoiding eating and drinking, especially alcohol or caffeine, at least three hours before bed.
