World’s largest battery-electric plane cost just £3.70 to power during 27 minute test

The world’s largest battery-electric plane successfully completed a test flight powered by just £3.70 worth of electricity.

On Wednesday (12 August), Sweden-founded, US-based company Heart Aerospace flew its 30-seat plane, called the X1, from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York.

The 25,000 lbs plane with a wingspan of 10ft flew for 27 minutes on battery power alone, reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet. No passengers were onboard, just one pilot.

“With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” said Anders Forslund, founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace.
