'World's dumbest criminal' arrested in Dublin city centre on way home from court

Gardai in Dublin arrested a motorist who was caught driving a stolen car on their way home from a court appearance.

The car thief was driving a Toyota Yaris in the city centre on Wednesday when they were intercepted by the Commercial Vehicle Garda Unit. Gardai quickly realised that they were driving a stolen car as they had removed the key cylinder from the ignition and hot-wired the car.

It turns out the thief had already been in court that day for another offence. The driver was soon arrested on their way home.

In a post on the official gardai Twitter account, a Garda spokesperson said: "The Commercial Vehicle Unit intercepted this stolen car earlier today in Dublin city centre. The driver was on their way home from a court appearance that same day. Driver arrested...again. #SaferRoads"

People took to the comments, with one man calling the driver the "world's dumbest criminal". Another Twitter user joked: "Only in Ireland…" while one person said "You couldn't make it up!!!"

Meanwhile, another person said: "Some level of confidence, to drive stolen car from a court to home!"
