Women told fatigue and anxiety ‘part of life’ before being diagnosed with serious conditions

  • A new report reveals that two in three female employees, whose symptoms like fatigue and anxiety were dismissed as "just part of life", later received a clinical diagnosis for conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disorders.
  • Hertility’s 2026 Workplace Report found 64 per cent of female employees experience an average of five concurrent symptoms, with over a third having at least one hormone out of range.
  • The report highlights that medical dismissal of women's health issues leads to unmanaged biology, costing businesses talent through long-term sick leave and preventable early exits from the workforce.
  • Over half of female employees (51.6 per cent) cite chronic fatigue as a primary workplace barrier, while nearly a third (31.5 per cent) show symptoms of undiagnosed iron deficiency anaemia.
  • Experts are calling for a shift in narrative to stop minimising symptoms and start diagnosing them, with the NHS also working to improve services and address the gynaecology backlog.
