A woman has died after falling from a balcony at an east London council's offices.

Police and ambulance services were called to Tower Hamlets town hall in Poplar at 4pm on Monday to reports a woman had fallen inside the eight-storey building.

Paramedics attempted to revive the 49-year-old but she died just before 4.30pm, police said.

A Met spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

"Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the woman was pronounced dead," they added.

"Her death is being treated as unexpected. It has been investigated and is not suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.

"Her next of kin have been informed."
