PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that the minister of social welfare and department officials will visit villages where the number of people belonging to the backward community is more and will help them avail of central and state schemes.
He said that many have been deprived of state and central schemes.
The chief minister also announced that the foundation stone for a Ambedkar Bhavan at Porvorim will be laid and that construction work will commence this year. Land for the purpose was transferred to the social welfare department last year, he said.
Stating that people have been demanding for an Ambedkar Bhavan for the past three years, Sawant said, “Last year land was handed over to the social welfare department and the officers wanted me to lay the foundation stone then but I told them that we would lay the foundation stone when the tender is issued. This year, we will issue tender and lay the foundation stone,” the chief minister said.
During the constructing, the government will keep in mind the need for a hostel facility so that any child from a backward community wanting to study in Panaji will have a place to stay, Sawant said
Speaking at the function organised on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, he said that the minister and officials will visit the villages so that the people do not have to travel to Panaji to apply for central and state schemes, Sawant said, adding that, henceforth, not a single person from the backward community will be deprived of the schemes.
He said that while making Goa swayampurna, the state government will take everyone together. “The state government has taken one step and now people have to come forward to make Goa self-sufficient.”
