Who is Joe Alwyn? Taylor Swift's British actor 'fiance' and first night they met

Taylor Swift is reportedly engaged to her boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

It's been said that Joe popped the question a few months ago, but the lovebirds are keeping their marriage plans under tight wraps.

Taylor and Joe have been dating for six years now, but unlike some of the singer's other relationships, she's kept her time with Joe more private.

Engagement rumours were first sparked when the loved-up couple took a romantic trip to Cornwall in January 2022.

Now, a source close to Joe has said that the pair are engaged and planning to marry in 18 months.

The source told The Sun: "Taylor and Joe are incredibly happy, and very, very in love, they’ve actually been engaged for a few months but have only told their inner-inner circle - basically immediate family, and trusted, very old friends.

"Everyone has been sworn to secrecy, too. Taylor has a beautiful ring but she only wears it when she’s at home - i.e behind closed doors."

As the pair could be getting set to tie the knot, here's what we know about Joe Alwyn and how he and Taylor met.

Who is Joe Alwyn?

Joe Alwyn is a British actor from London.

The 31-year-old started gaining a name for himself after starring in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in 2016.

He's since had roles in a host of other films including The Favourite, Mary Queen of Scotts, Harriet and Boy Erased.

Recently, Alwyn shot to further fame after starring in the BBC Three series Conversations with Friends, based on the book by Sally Rooney.

Alwyn plays Nick Conway, one of the leads in the show, and as a result he's recently appeared on a number of talk shows and had some high-profile interviews to discuss the role.

Despite the fact that Alwyn is dating one of the biggest stars on the planet and his own recent rise to fame, the actor doesn't feel like he's changed much.

He told GQ magazine: “[Newfound fame] was not really something I thought about a huge amount. There was no awareness of some kind of shift, I still felt exactly the same.”

Although Taylor and Joe have been dating for six years, it's clear that they have an agreement to keep their relationship as private as possible and Taylor certainly hasn't been as open about her relationship with Joe as she has been with other partners in the past.

Although nobody is certain about when the lovebirds first met, it's widely believed that they likely first crossed paths with each other at the 2016 Met Gala.

Taylor's fans believe that the song Dress on her 2017 Reputation album refers to the pairs first meeting, as the lyrics say: “Flashback to when you met me, your buzzed cut and my hair bleached.”

After the song was released, fans were quick to point out that Alwyn's hair was buzzed when he attended the Met Gala in 2016 and Taylor's hair was bleached.

But it looks like the 2016 Met Gala was an eventful night for Taylor.

The singer was still dating DJ Calvin Harris at the time and it was also the night that she met and danced with Tom Hiddleston, who she had a brief fling with shortly after when she split from Harris.

In October 2016, a month after breaking up with Hiddleston, Taylor and Joe attended the same Kings of Leon concert, sparking rumours that they could be dating.

And in 2017 their relationship was confirmed when the pair were caught together several times by paparazzi and Taylor told her fans that her song Gorgeous was about him.
