When Will Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Be Released For The Switch 2?

If you’re eager to jump into the next big racer on Nintendo’s new Switch 2, you’ll probably be wondering when Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds releases on the platform. The good news is that it’s definitely on the way, but you’ll have to wait a bit more.

It didn’t launch with the other platforms, but it’s expected to be released around this holiday season, so hang on tight, it’s right around the corner.

When Is The Switch 2 Version Releasing?

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was released on September 25, 2025, for almost every platform, including the original Switch, PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X/S, and PC.

Talking about the Switch 2 version: SEGA has announced it, but there isn’t any specific release date tied to it yet. All we know is that the digital version launches sometime during the 2025 holiday season.

However, if you’re planning on a physical cartridge edition, you’ll have to wait longer as it’s expected around early 2026.

Why The Delay?

Takashi Iizuka, the series producer, discussed the reasons behind the delay in an interview with Traxion:

We wanted to release the Switch 2 version at the same time [as other platforms]”,
“But because the console’s release date was later, we wanted to make sure we could provide a game that optimised the new console.”

He explains the delay with a fair reasoning — since the new Switch console itself wasn’t coming out as early, they decided to hold off and present a fully polished and optimised game.

We’ve all seen developers rushing unfinished games to meet deadlines, and the fate they suffer is unavoidable — launch issues, buggy gameplay, bad optimization, and whatnot.

The Sonic team and SEGA opting to delay really shows that they want to offer players an enhanced experience on the newer hardware rather than launch issues and poor optimization.

What Fans Should Expect

If you already own the original Switch and plan to upgrade, SEGA’s got you covered. They’ll be offering an upgrade pass that will transfer all your progress and content to Switch 2.

The physical release is even better news for fans. You’ll be purchasing a full game cartridge, not one of those “game-key cards”. That means you won’t just get a download key, you’ll actually own the full base game right out of the box.

While there are no confirmed specifications yet, the team is reportedly aiming for a noticeable performance and visual boost on the Switch 2 hardware. Whether that means 60 fps gameplay or native 4K remains to be seen.

Although there’s one thing we know for a fact: you can expect a smoother experience either way.
