When late Princess Diana refused to wear Queen Elizabeth's wedding tiara

Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth shared a rather formal relationship and a lot has been said about it by many former palace insiders. While some suggest that the duo shared a very courtly relationship, some say in Queen Elizabeth II, Diana found an unexpected ally. While the relationship still remains unclear, despite being written about by many, what is out in public, is the fact that the Queen did like late Princess Diana a lot, so much so that she allowed her to represent her at many formal functions, including the 1982 funeral of former Hollywood star, Princess Grace of Monaco, which Diana attended alone. The monarch also gave Diana many impressive gifts, in fact her wedding gift to Diana was a royal tiara, which Diana politely refused to wear on her wedding to Prince Charles. Well, here's the entire story.

While Diana's iconic silk taffeta gown with a 25-foot train, designed by the Emanuels went down the history as one of the most gorgeous wedding outfits ever, her tiara - which was a Spencer family heirloom also got written about a lot. But according to reports, the Queen had gifted Diana a tiara to wear on the wedding day, but Diana being Diana, politely refused her and decided to wear a tiara owned by her own family.

Queen had reportedly suggested Princess Diana to wear the Lover’s Knot tiara.

Express.co.uk spoke to the diamond experts at Steven Stone about the tiara.

The experts said: “The dazzling diamond and pearl tiara was originally designed for Queen Mary back in 1913 which passed on for her granddaughter.

“Queen Elizabeth II reportedly presented it to Diana for her royal wedding day in 1981, although she respectfully declined and opted to wear her father’s Spencer’s Family Tiara instead.

“Despite this, the Lover's Knot became one of her [Diana’s] favourite pieces, although it's claimed to have been so heavy that it hurt her head.

“The fact that it's so heavy it hurt Princess Diana's head indicates that this is a valuable tiara, embellished with the finest quality diamonds and pearls.”
