Welling: Investigation launched after man dies in house fire in south London

The circumstances of the death of a man in a house fire in south-east London is being probed by police.

The blaze tore through a two-storey mid-terraced home on Welling’s Kent Avenue shortly before 6pm.

A man was rescued from the property but died at the scene.

Around 25 firefighters were called to tackle the fire, which destroyed part of a loft conversion in the property.

Further details about the man’s identity have not been released.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: “A man was rescued from the building. Despite the efforts of emergency services, sadly he died at the scene.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Road closures are in place.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said the fire was declared over just before 7.30pm.

The spokesperson confirmed: “The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Met Police and the Brigade.”
