Viewers in shock as Paris Hilton reveals her 'real voice' on The One Show

Viewers were left in shock by reality television star and hotel heiress Paris Hilton after she appeared on the BBC's popular programme The One Show with a "different" sounding voice to what fans were expecting.

The 42-year-old socialite appeared on tonight's programme, which was hosted by Jermaine Jenas and Rylan Clarke while Alex Jones supported Gethin Jones in his epic 24 hour dance-a-thon for Comic Relief, to discuss her brand new autobiography 'Paris: The Memoir'. The book, which was published earlier this month, reveals the truth behind Paris' life as she tries to "take back the narrative" from what paparazzi and the media have shared about her for more than 20 years.

Paris said writing her book was a cathartic and "healing" process and said her memoir goes beyond what people have seen of her previously by showing what went on behind the cameras and fame, who she was growing up and what she has been through over the years.

Some of Paris' life experiences, which Rylan described as "harrowing," include her struggles with ADHD, her time at Provo Canyon School (which she publicly accused of mistreatment and abuse), an incident where she says a teacher at her Junior High School took advantage of her, and the backlash she experienced after a sex tape was leaked, as reported by Vogue.

But whilst she mentioned hard-hitting moments in her life, viewers couldn't help but be distracted by her voice"

Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: "I can’t get over Paris’ voice difference holy s**t #theoneshow." While another said: "Paris was so good playing that character because she made all of us believe that was her truth. I'm so amazed by how different her speech and demeanour are in reality. Kinda wanna read her book to find out more. #theoneshow #parishilton"

A third, @FlopsyPickle, added: "Has Paris had voice coaching? She sounds very different #TheOneShow".

Another couldn't believe her age, writing: "Paris Hilton is 42!! She looks incredible #TheOneShow"

During the appearance on The One Show, Paris shed some light on why people's perceptions of her often differ to her reality. She told host Jermaine that she previously created a "character" as a trauma response that was a "Barbie Doll".

After Jermaine, a former footballer-turned presenter, asked her if she ever finds herself "trapped" between two versions of herself: who she is, as depicted in her book, and the characters she has created for herself, Paris replied: "I think it was after what I went through, it was a trauma response. I created this character, a Barbie Doll fantasy life so I didn't have to think about what I'd went through. And then I got The Simple Life [a reality television series] and then I had to continue playing that character season after season."

"I almost got stuck in it because I got so used to doing it," Paris added. "And I'm a naturally shy person so it was sort of a mask to just be able to deal with all of the pressures. It was really difficult the way the media were so vicious with us. We were under a magnifying glass with the media constantly stalking us, making up stories, it was just very difficult to deal with. You definitely need a tough skin."

The One Show airs on BBC One weekdays at 7pm.
