Urgent Spain travel warning for UK tourists after 'injections' and robberies

People travelling to Spain this summer have been issued an urgent warning following reports of injections and robberies.

Spanish police are looking into reports of holidaymakers being injected with an unknown substance in nightclubs in Majorca and Ibiza. At least six victims have so far been identified, with some being robbed as well.

Majorca police are investigating a case where a man was reportedly injected with the mysterious substance in a nightclub near Palma. He stated that he saw a minor puncture wound on his leg before beginning to feel poorly — after which his belongings were stolen.

The Guardia Civil is also currently investigating six other cases where the victims were women. Four of these occurred in Ibiza, while a further two were reported in Majorca.

While no further crimes were reported, according to the Ultima Hora newspaper, the attacks have shocked locals and tourists — and warnings have been issued for anyone heading to bars or nightclubs in the Balearic Islands.

Police have stated that anyone who believes they may have been injected should immediately inform security at the venue and stay close to somebody they trust until a medic arrives.

One woman has spoken out after her friend was reportedly injected. She said: "One night, while partying, she began to feel dizzy and had tremors . They told security workers and her friends who took her to the hospital.

"I'm always very careful because these things, unfortunately, happen very often," she added.

The British Embassy in Spain has launched a "Stick With Your Mates" campaign in order to encourage tourists to be careful when heading out while on holiday. Working alongside the British embassy and consulate, the campaign will also call attention to the islands’ “zero tolerance against uncivil behaviour”.

The initiative gives tourists tips about how to remain vigilant while out partying and avoid serious accidents. Now in its third year, the Stick With Your Mates campaign was launched following a series of tragic incidents involving UK tourists on the Balearic Islands.

As reported by Leicester Live, a report by the British Consulate in Palma revealed that most of the accidents — many involving falls — occurred when the victims were alone.

UK Ambassador Hugh Elliott said: "The Balearics are a fantastic and safe destination, but we want to make sure that our visitors are aware of the local rules and know how to stay safe on a night out. We are working closely with the Balearic Government whose new measures include limiting excessive consumption of alcohol and anti-social behaviour.

"We all have a responsibility to know the rules, stick to them and ensure a great holiday for ourselves, and those around us."
