UK cinemas screening the Queen's funeral for free - but some will close on Monday

Several cinema venues across the UK will be screening the Queen's funeral procession on Monday September 19, while others are to remain shut.

Vue cinemas will be screening the live broadcast free of charge. It will be the only screening for the entire day.

A statement on their Facebook read: "On Monday 19 September, our UK venues will be screening the live broadcast of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

"Seats will be free of charge and our retail offering will be limited to complimentary bottled water during the broadcast, with no other snacks or drinks available for purchase. No other content will be shown on this day."

As reported in Birmingham Live, Cineworld, Odeon and Showcase cinemas will all shut on the Queen 's funeral. The chains will shut their sites on September 19 in a mark of respect.

Government guidance says: "Organisations may choose to close on the day of the State Funeral, however there is no obligation to do so and this is at the discretion of individual organisations.

"As with other organisations, these institutions may wish to display or share images of previous Royal visits, particularly if they are one of Her Majesty's patronages."

A statement from Odeon read: “As a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II all Odeon cinemas in the UK & Northern Ireland will be closed on Monday 19th September. We will re-open again on Tuesday 20th September.”

The Cineworld statement read: “Out of respect to HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family, all of our UK cinemas will be closed on Monday September 19, the day of the state funeral. Those who have made bookings for this day will be contacted shortly.”

Bookings for the screening can be made on each venues official website.

Other cinema chains which will be screening the sombre yet historic event include Curzon, who mostly have English venues, and Arc with one site in Peterhead. Like Vue, both venues will host the screening free of charge and cancel all other showings for that day.

Arc said in a statement on Twitter: "We have to decided to screen Her Majesty The Queen's State Funeral on Bank Holiday Monday 19th September at 11am.

"This is a free event but pre-booking your seat is essential. There will be no other shows taking place while the funeral is broadcast."
