Trans Day of Visibility: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani greets trans people, says ‘Your existence is not up for debate’

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31 with a strong message of support for transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mamdani highlighted the long-standing presence of trans communities across cultures, saying they have “always been here — from the hijra of India to the Diné nádleehi to the leaders who built the modern LGBTQIA+ movement in New York.”

“Your existence is not up for debate. Your lives are not a political issue,” he added.

What is Transgender Day of Visibility

Observed annually on March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates the lives and contributions of transgender people while raising awareness about the challenges they face.

The day was established in 2009 by Rachel Crandall to recognise the community beyond narratives of violence, while acknowledging that not all trans individuals can safely be visible due to discrimination.

Mamdani has consistently voiced support for making New York a pro-trans “sanctuary city.” In his campaign and public remarks, he pledged to expand protections and access to services for transgender residents.

Push for policy support

His proposals include significant funding for gender-affirming care and the creation of an Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs to strengthen support systems across the city.

In his victory speech, Mamdani reiterated his commitment to marginalised communities, including transgender people.

“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he said, adding that the city would stand by those “with their back against the wall.”

He also criticised policies targeting trans individuals, vowing that New York would actively counter such measures and ensure safety and dignity for all.

Mamdani’s outreach has included attending community events such as Trans Day of Visibility rallies and town halls. His administration aims to expand housing, healthcare, and legal support for transgender New Yorkers.

The mayor said the goal is to build a city where every trans person can live “openly, safely, and with joy.”
