Toy Story 5 Just dropped its first teaser trailer and Bonnie’s playroom will never be the same. In the lead up to the new Pixar movie, the creative team has teased that technology is a big discussion point in Toy Story 5. Greta Lee stars in the film as Lilypad, a smart tablet that’s making things difficult for Woody and the gang. It’s a modern problem for our favorite group of toys.
Director Andrew Stanton is back in the saddle alongside Tim Allen and Tom Hanks as Buzz and Woody. Joan Cusack also returns as Jessie this time around. Forky joins the adventure too, with Tony Hale voicing the favorite from last time out. It feels like a reunion in a lot of ways.
Stanton and co-director Kenna Harris had some short thoughts as the trailer dropped. “It’s been a hilarious and poignant journey exploring how our favorite team of legacy toys might respond to today’s world of technology, and we’re thrilled to share this first glimpse with audiences,” they wrote. “Having the remarkably talented Greta Lee bring Lilypad to life — balancing a playfully antagonistic tone with humor and heart — has been incredible.”
Toy Story 5 gets its first trailer

Strange things are happening to these familiar faces in Toy Story 5. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Woody, Buzz, Jesse and their friends on the big screen. With Disney going through a period of transition, much like the rest of the entertainment landscape, getting back to big franchises was a stated priority for CEO Bob Iger. It doesn’t get much more quintessential Disney than Toy Story, so it’s not a shock to see an effective first teaser for what Woody and his friends will be up against in this new movie.
Technology plays a bigger role in all of our lives than it did a decade ago. For some of us, technology might play an even bigger role in our lives than it did a week before. Our favorite cast of plastic protagonists are no different in that regard. When Toy Story hit theaters in 1995, the idea of Andy having a cowboy and an astronaut as his favorite playthings made a ton of sense. But, in Bonnie’s world, of course she would have a tablet in the mix by now. There’s usefulness there, but also a healthy fear of the future and the unknown.
Our World is marked by the uncertainty that differing technologies bring into our general orbit period from AI, to that goofiness about NFTs, cryptocurrency and beyond. The kind of optimism that marked the first Toy Story installment can be hard to find. But one thing this director has done a great job with over the course of his career is find a light touch to explore heady concepts. If Toy Story 5 follows in the footsteps of entries like Toy Story 3, there’s no doubt that an emotional tale can emerge that will thrill parents and kids alike when it hits theaters next year.
