Tottenham announce new contract for defender following transfer links

Tottenham have exercised an option to extend Ben Davies' contract until the end of next season.

Davies' deal was due to expire this summer but Spurs have confirmed the left-sided defender will be staying for another year.

The Wales captain had been linked with a transfer move to Wrexham.

Davies is the longest-serving player at Spurs, having joined from Swansea in 2014 and made 358 appearances in all competitions.

In a statement, Spurs said: “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Ben Davies' contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.

“Now our longest-serving senior player, Ben joined us from Swansea City in the summer of 2014 and has been a constant, reliable presence in our squad ever since.”

Wales captain Davies made 28 appearances for Spurs last season, including a long run in the team when they were hit with an injury crisis in defence.

Davies is currently on international duty with Wales, who he helped beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Friday. Craig Bellamy’s side face Belgium in a crunch game in their group on Monday.

Asked about his future this week, Davies said: “I don’t think I am going to be the person who is making any of those decisions, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s full focus here this week."
