Ukraine said it carried out strikes against an Iranian ship in Russian-occupied Crimea as President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of providing Tehran with intelligence used to plan recent attacks on U.S. and allied military facilities in the Persian Gulf.
The allegations come as U.S. intelligence analysts investigate whether Russia helped Iran target CIA facilities across the Middle East by providing targeting information or advanced drone technology, according to Reuters. One source told Reuters "more than one and fewer than a dozen" sites across the region had been attacked, including in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and eastern Iraq.
The developments underscore the increasingly interlinked nature of the wars between Russia and Ukraine in Eastern Europe and between the U.S. and Iran in the Middle East. Yaroslav Trofimov, chief foreign affairs correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, wrote on X that "the two wars have officially merged. Iran says a Ukrainian drone attack on its ship in the Caspian has killed a sailor. Ukraine earlier said it was targeting vessels ferrying arms between Russia and Iran on the Caspian Sea."
Iran summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires and accused Kyiv of carrying out a "hostile and criminal act," CNBC reported. Iranian officials said explosions aboard a commercial vessel killed one sailor and injured several others. Tehran insisted the ship was carrying civilian cargo and warned that the incident "cannot go unanswered."
Zelensky said in remarks cited by the Kyiv Post that Iran "already attacked us", and pointed out that Iran supplied Russia with thousands of suicide drones from the beginning of the conflict.
Citing Zelensky, The Jerusalem Post reported that Ukrainian intelligence observed Russian satellite surveillance of U.S. military facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait before and after Iranian drone and missile strikes, suggesting Moscow helped Tehran collect targeting data and conduct battle damage assessments. Kyiv said it intends to share the intelligence with the United States and other international partners.
