Times Square shooting: Three injured as bodies seen on ground at tourist hotspot

Three people have been shot in New York’s Times Square, with witnesses describing scenes of panic at the busy tourist hotspot.

An 18-year-old woman and two men, aged 19 and 65, were injured in the attack at West 44th Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan just after 1am EST. All three were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they remain in a stable condition. A suspect is in custody.

Footage from the scene shows terrified members of the public fleeing after gunshots rang out outside the Hard Rock Cafe. One clip appeared to show a victim on a stretcher being wheeled into an ambulance surrounded by officers, while another showed a car just metres away riddled with bullet holes.

The incident comes just days after another deadly shooting in downtown Manhattan. On July 28, 27-year-old Shane Tamura stormed into the Midtown offices housing the NFL’s headquarters with an assault rifle, killing four people — including an off-duty police officer — before taking his own life.

Authorities believe Tamura’s target was the NFL, with New York mayor Eric Adams revealing a note mentioning the league was found on his body. Police say he had driven across the country before carrying out the attack.
