A new burger restaurant is set to open in Manchester where the staff are purposely rude and expect the customers to be rude back. The ‘interactive’ Karen’s Diner chain started in Australia and opened a branch in Sheffield last month.
It’s now coming to Prestwich, and it’s already taking bookings from May 1 onwards. According to the booking info, ‘Karen's is an interactive diner and an absurdly fun experience’.
It goes on: “At Karen's you will be greeted and waited upon by rude waiters who in return are expecting you to give it full Karen. A place where you can complain until the cows come home because we literally don't care.
“You can expect good food, good fun and a dining experience like you've never had before. Let us know if it's your birthday, if your name is Karen and for the love of Karen don't ask to speak to the manager.”
There are already branches of Karen's in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sidney.
The pejorative term ‘Karen’ has become ‘a thing’ in recent years, coined to denote a certain type of rude and entitled woman who, indeed, will often be heard asking to speak to the manager in restaurants and shops, as well as personifying all manner of objectionable behaviour.
But the term has been accused of being everything from ageist and sexist, to racist, classist and misogynistic, due to its stereotyping.
The names of the cocktails at Karen’s Diner particularly lean into the theme, with names like The Music is Too Loud, I've Been Waiting 10 Minutes for Some Service and You've Just Lost My Business.
Prices at Karen's are also on the steep end, with The Basic Karen burger starting at £20, though it was a wagyu beef patty, while the The 'I Want to See the Manager' Karen will set you back £26. The brisket fries also weigh in at a sturdy £17, though this is likely to incorporate the 'theatre' aspect of the experience.
