The 2026 edition of Primavera Sound attracted around 287,000 attendees and proved to be more eventful than anyone expected. From perilous weather conditions to surprise artists joining the lineup, this year's festival may have produced more surprises than any recent installment.

Perhaps the biggest surprise came from Olivia Rodrigo, who was not listed on the official lineup but appeared in Barcelona for an unexpected concert announced only hours before taking the stage. The pop superstar delivered an 11-song set that immediately became one of the most talked-about moments of the festival. Her set came days before the release of her new album, "you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love."

The real shock arrived midway through the performance when Rodrigo debuted a brand-new song, "What's Wrong With Me," and welcomed Robert Smith of The Cure, who had played the festival the night before, to perform it with her. The collaboration marked the first featured artist on one of Rodrigo's studio albums and generated headlines worldwide.

Many were surprised when the British indie group The xx were listed on the lineup, as the trio had not performed together in nearly a decade, leading many fans to wonder whether the group would ever return to festival stages.

The weather itself became an unlikely headline. Heavy rain and strong winds disrupted opening-day programming, forcing organizers to suspend concerts and leaving thousands of fans scrambling for updates. Artists like Doja Cat and Massive Attack were forced to cancel their sets.

Yet what could have become a disaster instead created some of the festival's most memorable scenes. Rain-soaked performances by artists such as Father John Misty and rising New York rock band Geese earned praise from critics, who described the adverse conditions as adding to the emotional intensity of the shows.

Another surprise came from the festival's closing night headliners, Gorillaz and KNEECAP. Both acts brought out Arab Barghouti, the son of imprisoned Palestinian political leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been described as Palestine's Nelson Mandela.

Barghouti has been imprisoned in Israel since 2002, and an Inter-Parliamentary Union report found that his trial was not fair. Arab came out before Gorillaz's set and during KNEECAP's to call for the release of his father and thanked both acts for giving him their platform for their cause.

Massive Attack, who have also been vocal about their support for Palestine, likely would have done something similar. They expressed their disappointment with the cancellation on social media, writing, "We were really excited to play this festival. From the diversity of the bill, the spirit of the region and the breadth of public solidarity with the Palestinian cause, this one was special for us and had been the pinnacle of our summer preparation. Since accepting the offer in September, we'd created a new iteration of the show, prepared bespoke content, & invited special guests..."
